Silk Road cycling video (2012)

Image
This is a short video overview of cycling the Silk Road with 6 gears mamachari city bikes, from Japan to Greece. Didn't have in mind to make a video feature back then so most of the -hard- times when we were cycling I didn't shoot any videos (a few photos though), at least I was shooting short handheld clips here and there and managed to make this one. Will be making a few more story-style more specific videos about this trip in the future. In this cycling trip we passed through  Japan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Greece. Majestic landscapes, amazing people, weird food and interesting cultures!

Cycling Agistri island (Saronic Gulf - GREECE)

Image
Agistri island along with Aegina and the neighboring islands consisted of the Kingdom of Aegina of the mythical King Aeakos. According to Homer, Agistri was called Kekrifalia, which means "adorned head" and appears as an ally of Aegina during the Trojan War. Tradition notes that visitors amazed by the natural beauty of the island were caught like fish on the hook and lived there for all their lives (Agistri means fish-hook). Today, only 1.5 hour away from Piraeus by ferry (or faster with flying dolphin) its a small heaven on earth situated at the Saronic Gulf, smothered in plants and trees, with pine trees touching its crystal blue waters. And the best part: until now mass tourism hasn't arrived yet! The route is a bit less than 20km, starting from Skala where the ferry port is, going through Megalohori, then Drakonera beach, inland to Limenaria village and finally on the best part, Aponisos, before heading back [map by Google maps]   Elevation ...

Cycling Tourkovounia (Athens - GREECE)

Image
Athens, apart of being surrounded by three mountains, has quite a few hill ranges. One of them is "Tourkovounia" which  means "Turkish mountains". Named due to a large Turkish cemetery that existed there during the  Ottoman period  in Greece. They  are the tallest and most extensive hill range in central Attica, dividing the Attica basin into eastern and western parts.   There are quite a few ways to go up, decided to go through here [38°01'11.4"N 23°45'59.8"E] where a nice dirt track leads up. Short stop before the top View from the top towards the west Nice spot to catch some shots The vista at the top and our bikes Walking a bit you can get another view, this time towards north The view towards north, with the Olympic Stadium Taking a few shots facing north, Olympic Stadium on the top right Apart of one hiker there were no people at all during our time there. Would be better to have a mountain bike due to the dirt tr...

Cycling Penteli mountain (Athens - GREECE)

Image
I always wanted to be on the top of Penteli mountain when I see it from my balcony during sunset bathed in orange color. So yesterday when I saw the weather cleared I decided to go for it, cycling. The route from Kifisia center its around 13km to the top, although its not much distance its a quite challenging ride as the uphill is pretty steep, especially once you hit the hairpins halfway to the top, I was checking many times the grade and it was mostly 10%!Due to lack of time to make it up and down before the light goes out I didn't manage to do sightseeing, there are some interesting spots to explore like a cave, a few churches and an abandoned quarry. Penteli is supposed to be the mountain where the marble used to build the Acropolis was extracted.Map by Google maps   Elevation chart, destination at 1.109 meters high By Bike Route Toaster  Penteli mountain looks like this from my balcony. It is situated northeast of Athens and its highest po...
