Iceland (2006) ~ 03.Seltjarnarnes, Nautholsvik Beach

Image
That night an Icelandic friend of mine, Thorunn, came to Reykjavik with a car with her friend and they took me around a bit. Noticed that everybody is paying by credit card for even the smallest little things. After eating out and watching Tokyo Drift in the movies (cinema entry kr800) (good thing in Iceland they don't dub, all movies play in English with Icelandic subtitles), they took me to Seltjarnarnes, a town on the edge of Reykjavik peninsula.  The lighthouse in Seltjarnarnes. We couldn't walk further as on that period birds lay their eggs on the pathway. The photograph was taken at 1:16am, the midnight sun giving us a bit of twilight and thats as night as it could get! Seltjarnarnes  is the smallest Icelandic township by land but the most interesting fact is that it  became the world's first town where every citizen had access to fiber optics  in 2007! Reykjavik has a beach! Oh yes! Its the Nautholsvik geothermal beach, south of the city. ...

Iceland (2006) ~ 02.Reykjavik

My accommodation in Reykjavik was the campsite, situated a bit outside the city center, for 800kr/night (price of 2006).  My tent in the campsite The campsite was really beautiful! What stroke me during my first "night" in Iceland was the midnight sun, it didn't really become night at all! Maybe just a bit of twilight zone but still, not dark. I woke up at 3.00am with full light because the birds were singing! Which made me wonder how the animals cope with this...? When do they really sleep since its never really night? Lovely side roads by the sea going towards the center from the campsite. An iconic Reykjavik sculpture, "The Sun Voyager", a boat of  stainless steel that stands on a circle of granite slabs. According to the artist  JĂłn Gunnar ,  it contains within itself the promise of undiscovered territory, a dream of hope, progress and freedom. In 1986,  JĂłn Gunnar  won  a competition for a new outdoor sculpture to com...

Iceland (2006) ~ 01.Arrival and the Blue Lagoon

I can tell that Iceland is nowadays a very popular destination. So popular that actually the country is trying to cope with the increased demand of tourism which might be bigger than the country and the infrastructure can sustain, at least from what I hear. I can't imagine how it is now, its been more than 10 years since my visit back in 2006. Many things must have changed and its definitely a time for me to revisit. But before that, I would like to share here that trip, for the ones who have been there now maybe to compare how things were back then when the tourists were much fewer, for the people who haven't been yet to get inspired and go visit. Two important notes a) the economy back then was strong , June 2006 when I started my trip the exchange rate was 1€ = 95kr , checking the current rate at the moment is 1€ = 113kr and b) the number or tourists visiting Iceland in 2006 was around 400.000 people while for 2016 was a staggering 1.7 million!   Iceland (2006) ~ 01.Ar...
